Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Gambling makes you fat

I found myself near some poker machines on the weekend and succumbed to putting a couple of dollars (literally $2) in the slot.  Being the big gambler I am, I played a one cent machine...or as our friends in the U.S.A. would say...I played the penny slots.
Of course, I lost my money.
I didn't expect to do otherwise.

On Monday I found myself gambling again.
I should have known better!
I wasn't gambling for a win, I was gambling not to lose.
The odds were strongly in my favour.

You see every time I peg out the goats I run the risk of puncturing the polypipe that runs from the pump on the creek into my neighbour's property.  (My pipe is metal so no probs there.)
In fact, I actually mentioned this to the the Cook and her mum who were out there with me.
But when you consider the diameter of the pipe
compared to the width of the neighbour's land....
you would have to be very lucky unlucky to hit it.

It wasn't until I went to bring the goats in later that day that I saw the puddle, actually the small to middling sized lake I had created.

Look at that!
What an unlucky shot...right through the centre!

I have never fixed one of these before but for sure it must be easy.
Yesterday, the Cook and I drove the 25 kms up the mountain
to the hardware store to buy the necessaries.

This wasn't all bad because the hardware store
is next to a wonderful bakery aptly named The Flying Tarts.
So we flew in for brunch.
You would have lost your money if you bet otherwise on such a sure thing!

In the hardware, I explained what sort of thingy I needed and when the nice man asked what size, I made a circle with my finger and thumb...gamble number three.
Yep! It was a dead cert to be the wrong size!

So today we will be going back up the mountain to change it ...
unfortunately we will have to have another coffee and cake.

Now that, my friends,
is why gambling makes you fat!

  2. Hazel,

Cute story and bad luck for sure. The bakery sounds pretty good to me, I have a hard time passing up cake and pastries.

  5. I just love your sense of humour and you must live in the most beautiful part of the country by the sound of it. Nothing like a good fresh bakery, certainly worth the drive. You may have your own lake by the time the hole in the pipe is fixed.

  7. I think you gambled and won. Any series of events that takes you to a place called The Flying Tarts is a winner series in my book!

    Nice shot Hazel!

ps we have a cafe here called The Flying Nun... I'm betting there's a joke in there somewhere about nuns and tarts.

  11. It really was the wrong size? Or was the bakery too good to pass up again?
