I have banned the chookies from the vegetable garden. They have been a great help in preparing the beds but now I want to plant all of the Summer seeds and seedlings. Brewster and the girls would just dig them all up, so out they must stay.
It is a shame because a couple of the girls have taken to eating snails. Once the seedlings are established I will let them back into sections.
The path beside the shed now sports an arch with some bird netting weighed down with a bit of old water pipe. It will be easy enough for me to move the pipe and lift the curtain but hopefully enough to keep the chooks out.
Apple trees are planted outside the vegetable garden along this fence. I haven't been able to keep mulch on them because of all the scratching for bugs that goes on. Today I fed the trees, mulched them and covered them with bird netting. The netting will keep the chooks out of the mulch and prevent them from jumping up onto the fence to get into the vegetable garden.
Now all I have to do is remember to shut the two gates into the patch.
Looks effective, hope it has been! My problem is geese!
