I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Pyramids


Firstly, thanks for all the kind thoughts.  Mum has made a good recovery and has returned to her usual place of residence...a little more frail, but well enough.

I heard a scientist predicting, that by the year 2050, we will be eating 80% less meat due to the high environmental, oil, and water costs of producing meat.  The commentator was aghast.  Some people just live with their heads in the sand, don't they?

I have seen another vegan pyramid that swapped the veggies and the grains.  I quite like the look of this one, but I couldn't be a vegan...love my dairy and eggs too much.

    I've not seen those veggie pyramids. I don't really like being reminded how naughty I am with my fruit. Just never been a big fruit eater. And water... Very bad on the water!

  2. I'm with you - I could never be Vegan, butter is just too damn tasty! I wonder what the impact on the environment would be if we were all veg?

  3. Hazel, I'm glad to hear your Mum's doing better. Like you, I love my dairy and eggs too much to ever be a vegan, but I do think it makes sense to switch the grains and fruits/veggies at the bottom of the vegetarian pyramid. -Jean

  4. My recommendation would be the bottom pyramid with eggs and dairy added. The problem I made when I switched to a vegetarian diet was that I didn't understand the need to maintain a protein to carbohydrate ratio. Without meat in the diet, even if replaced with legumes, nuts, etc, a vegetarian diet typically has less protein. This is not a problem as long as the carbohydrates are also reduced. Breads, cereals and rice are all high in carbohydrates. I would reason that is why the vegans switched it around.

  5. Some people are such heavy meat eaters that they should eat 80% less meat. I love meat, milk, and cheese too much to willingly switch to vegetarian or vegan.

    Besides, if I did not love good, fresh eggs from hens who live in and eat grass, my two hens would not have a spectacular life.
