My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

You gotta love cucurbit

See the pumpkin in the middle?
It is about a metre off the ground.
Gardening can be frustrating and disappointing sometimes.  Things die, or they do magnificently then the weather or some sort of pest intervenes to rob you of the pleasure of admiring and/or eating what you have grown.  This is why I love growing cucurbits...squashes, pumpkins, zucchini and the like.

They are such generous plants, filling up every empty space they find,
climbing up when they run out of space.
See the corn in the photo above...overtaken!

I love their big leaves that droop in the heat
then bounce back when it cools down and they get a drink.

Then of course there is the fruit.
It almost grows before your eyes.
Pumpkins keep for months and are such a versatile veggie.

Best of all, you can shove a few seeds in the ground
and when they transform the garden into a jungle
people walking past comment on how good your veggie patch
looks and what a fabulous gardener you are.

I am so smitten.

  1. Well you clearly are a fabulous gardener! I still can't manage to grow a pumpkin. Or a cucumber... But my tomatoes are good.

  2. You are a fabulous gardener Hazel. I am so jealous- perhaps next year I will be able to grow some pumpkins. My zucchini is producing well, the rats don't seem to find them very tasty or perhaps they haven't yet found them! HDW

  3. I dare not grow pumpkins. They would entirely dominate my little garden. I'm trying this year a variety of squash called Butterbush, which is allegedly very compact, so we'll see how that goes. Actually what I really need is some good sunshine to make things grow properly. Last Summer was dismal, and even your prized pumpkins would have struggled to impress.
Your garden is looking nicely mature now - as if you have been nurturing it for ages.

  6. I agree Hazel. They really are an easy care vegetable. I've learnt too that the seeds are very hard to kill in the compost bin. We sometimes have them coming up in the weirdest places around the garden.
