Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Moving on in a tractor

A couple of the girls 'volunteered'
(well they did once I caught them)
to help out in the vegetable garden.

They are cleaning up what is left of my brassicas,
after the goats had finished with them.

The chicken tractor is finally being put to good use.

This is also handy because it will allow me
to check which chooks are laying.

There are between 2 and 5 eggs per day.
The young ones' eggs are a good size now
and hard to tell from the older girls'.
I think the original hens (18 mths old)
may finally be laying again.

  1. Eggtastic - that accumulates into alot of eggs during the week. Do you use them all? Sell them? Give some away? Kelli

  2. Nice tractor Hazel. Can you post a pic of where they usually live? I know you have before...I'm looking for ideas for a new and improved chook run.

  3. Kelli - we love eggs, we bake and make pasta to freeze and give them away.

  4. Thats a great idea with the tractor!
I was so sorry to see the broccoli murder a la Bubba! I know the feeling. At least the girls will turn it into yummy eggs.

Do you find that your girl's yolks are really orange after they have eaten a lot of greens?

  5. Aren't chook tractors the most amazing things? Since I made mine I can't think of a better way to clear and prepare a garden bed. And if you through in kitchen scraps they will help make and spread the compost for you. That seems like quite an elaborate design, mine is cheap and simple but much larger.

  6. And it's keeping the girls relatively safe from foxes. I'm getting a bit paranoid about them this winter!
