My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Wombat

When harvesting winter veggies,
I always think of that old nickname given
to a certain type of man...Wombat.

What! You are not familiar with that
particular Aussie character?

You know, the bloke that eats, roots and leaves?

This lot of veggies ended up in a particularly
delish vegetable pasta recently, using homemade pasta sheets.

The white veggie on top is a white beetroot...
it looked like a beetroot,
tasted like a beetroot,
but was white...quite disconcerting.

I will make another lasagne and post the recipe.
It starred pumpkin and it must be
time for another pumpkin recipe.

  1. Oh yes! More pumpkin recipes! I will be throwing together a pumpkin, spinach and goats cheese frittata for dinner tonight.

...and maybe some pumpkins scones for the HH. I will have to pass as I am still not eating bread for a month. Only seven days to go...seven of the longest days of my life.

  3. While root vegies are delicious, I was hoping to see a fat furry creature had visited your garden - much nicer than the human variety.

  8. White beetroot? - doesn't sound right somehow. I once ate at Heston Blumenthal's "Fat Duck" restaurant: one of the courses was a pair of jellies, one made with golden beetroot and the other one with blood oranges. You expected the orange-coloured one to taste of oranges, and the deep red one to taste of beetroot, but actually it was the other way round. Very confusing for the senses!

  10. Did the white beetroot discolour during cooking ?

I better get the pasta maker out - I love a vego lasagne - so look forward to your recipe :)

P.S. great photos and post about Vera's girl bits ;)

She is a lovely coloured hen, couldn't image my current brood letting me catch them let alone draw out a wing :(

  11. The beetroot stayed white when cooked...very strange.

Mark and Gaz...is it the veggies you are after or the wombat? :-)

  12. I, too would have loved to see a big brown visitor in your garden. Do they like white beetroot? and I wonder if one did wander in, would her private parts be safe from your camera? LOL

  13. Maybe the beetroot was trying to be like your purple top turnip? Lovely harvest.
