I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

To verify or not to verify?

Sorry to disappoint...no pictures or funny stories today...
I have been too busy entertaining the Cook's mother.
However, she has duly been taken home
and put back in her usual spot
and life here at Hazel's is back to normal...whatever that is.

Some regular consumers of the ramblings on this blog may have noticed that you have not needed to do word verification when making comments for a while.

I changed the settings about a month ago.  I was nervous about what could happen...but nothing fearful has occurred.  Blogger's spam filters have picked up three or four comments and kept them for me to check.

I am interested in feedback from others who have disabled word verification.
Maybe we can encourage a few others to change their settings too.

When you read quite a few blogs and like to make comments,
it is a real drag having to type in those ridiculous words...
even though they are quite funny sometimes.

What do you reckon?

  1. I was leary of discontinuing the verification as well. I seem to get a spam comment daily. I've kept the moderator feature so although Blogger has accurately put the comments in "spam" I feel a little safer knowing I have the final say. I'm with you, it sure slows things down when you have to word verify with each website you're commenting on. Sometimes it slows my computer down enough where it won't go thru.

  2. I took it off mine Hazel, as I hate doing it on other blogs...and thought it may encourage more visitors to say hello when they visit mine...

  3. I took it all off mine, after a fellow blogger said she's been having trouble leaving a comment. No problems so far, the odd spammer (no hecklers or nasty bitches from my past have come out of the woodwork... yet!), but yes, I now notice on other blogs that it can be tricky to leave comments, sometimes to the point that I give up! I've had more comments on my blog since then, though that could be coincidence. Getting comments is a highlight for me, so I want to make it as easy as possible for people to do so.

  5. I love you for taking away your word verification... it made my day... and Suzanne too, pair of absolute champions!

Bring it on and take them away people!

  6. I have wondered about doing that myself. It does make it easier when sending a message. But personally if I was going to send a comment I'd do it anyway regardless of the crazy word requirement. Also sometimes when I have to do it, I'm reminded to re-read my comment mistakes and find a whole bunch of errors that my ipad has incorrectly made for me.

  7. oops see what I mean. That should read "my comment for mistakes".

  8. I have never had it on mine. I don't mind so much putting in the words on other people's blogs but I don't see the point of it. I think some precautions are ...over cautious, lol.

  9. I am not a fan of word verification, too often I have written a comment and then simply lost it somehow and then cannot be bothered writing another comment.

To tell you the truth I have enough trouble spelling words correctly let alone these jumble letters combinations that test my patience and sometimes my eyesight.

  10. Well, I really hate that verification stuff but I didn't know I had a choice. I'll go take it off my own blog and then maybe my relatives, who are most of my readers, will be able to figure out how to comment on the blog instead of sending me an email. What kind of spam do blogs get? Unless it's porno, it can't be that bad.

  11. One of the comments was religious and didn't relate to the post. A couple have been gobbldey gook. One looked like an advertisement for something...but I didn't click on it, just deleted it. The spam filter seems to work well, it hasn't caught any genuine comments yet.

  15. I don't had it..it drives me silly and i post much less on blogs I enjoy because of it.. Sure there are buttheads( i had a bunch of vegetarain/vegans attack me awhile back on a homekill post i done) I just ignore and delete..and sometimes its kinda intertaining-shows ya how dull my life is LOL)but seriously none of us chat about anything to controversal that we would have people going off at us..just a bit of spam here and there..SO I'm in the not verify camp

  16. The word verification is there to stop computer-generated spam, not human-generated. Some unscrupulous people will arrange for their computers to send out messages (sometimes adverts) to any website, email address or blog they can find (or guess). The computers do not have the ability to answer the randomly-generated questions.
In terms of human-generated spam, I get very little, such that it's not a real problem, but apparently as one's blog gets more popular it becomes more likely that one will get spammed, so I live in hope!

  18. I wouldn't have a clue if I have word verification or not. How do I find out and how do I change it if I do?

And you've got lots of comments for a post that doesn't have a photo or funny story - I live in hope. :)

  21. I say Yes to no Word Verification, I shall do this now, I have often thought about it....I used to approve all my comments first too but I recently took that off because I would have to check my email all the time to allow the comments to appear. I figure if someone puts something up there that is inappropriate then I still have the control to delete it anyway! Thanks for the tip Hazel and for everyones helpful comments.

  22. Coincedently, I disabled my word verification this week..I was fed up with doing it on other blogs and it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps I had it on mine..agh! No problems so far with spam, but the comments are easily enough deleted if and when they do appear, so we'll see how it goes...
    :)

  23. Yeah I got rid of it, and theres been no spam in my spam box, so far. But I probably just jinxed myself!

  24. Yay for no word verification! I've always had it turned off on mine because I remember back in the days of dial up, I literally couldn't leave comments on many people's blogs because of the time it took to load all the word verification boxes. I've had the odd random comment on my blog, but they are easy enough to delete if you deem it neccessary.
