My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Sunflowers and an old dog

They say there are only two certainties in life...death and taxes.
If you are a dog there is only one.  Mervyn the Wonderdog met the inevitable yesterday.
If  you knew him I know you will have your own memories of this little dynamo.
He was a big personality in a tiny package.
If you didn't know him, don't be sad.
He had a wonderful life and at 17.5 years, deaf, blind, and unable to stand properly ... it was time.

He had a nice deep warm bath, a blow dry, lots of cuddles, a trip to a cafe inside my jumper and then onto the vet for a quiet end.  He has a special place in the garden now.
Here are few photos of him on his last day.

  2. I'm sorry for your loss. Having a wonderfully peaceful day was so very nice. I did a similar thing last year when it was my 19 yr old cats time. Peace and blessings for you all!

  4. Mervyn had a wonderful life with you Hazel. He was the best "Ball boy", so smart, so fast, so energetic and he even climbed trees to retrieve balls! Caesar

  8. oh Hazel I just cried looking at that little face and the beautiful sunflower, what a lovely last day you gave him. It's never easy saying goodbye to a pet.

  9. Sorry to hear the sad news about Mervyn, but I suppose it has to come sometime and better that it should happen in the way you have described than perhaps as the result of a long and painful illness. I hope you will find the company of Bazza, Bubba & Co soon fill the void in your life that Mervyn's departure will have left.

  14. I've enjoyed your story and photos. 17.5 years is a pretty long life for a dog. I guess it is the typical life span for a small dog. The bigger ones have shorter lives. I have 3 dogs currently and sooner or later would have to go through this reality or certainty as you put it.

  16. Oh Hazel! So sorry to hear about Mervyn. May he be chasing a great big ball and having long tummy scratches in the big kennel in the sky.
