My photo
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Daisies and phlox

There seems to be a dearth of bees around this year.  It probably has something to do with the wet weather.  They like this daisy though.   Clear evidence that it is a great idea to plant flowers in with the veggies to lure the pollinators in.  Mind you, these are in the front garden, so are not doing a very good job of advertising the pumpkins. in the back yard.

  1. I am guilty of not planting enough flowers, although I did put in a few at near the end of last year. I hadn't realised how lovely they would look in amongst the vegetables until they started blooming. My humble plantings were quite magnificent, and I have vowed to plant many many more this year.

Of course I had forgotten then until your lovely daisy just reminded me!

    Thanks Hazel.

  2. Hi Hazel, you have such a beautiful garden! Again I am reminded about also planting flowering plans to attract the bees. Thank you for sharing!!!!

  3. Hazel I have herbs flowering in my vegie garden that attract the bees - parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, comfrey, basil and coriander.
I also have some marigolds that are growing beautifully but are a bit slow to flower this year - the bees don't find them attractive but other insects do.

  4. Yes, I'm also guilty of concentrating too much on the edible plants at the expense of the ornamental. A good compromise for me is to keep growing lots of Marjoram and Oregano. The bees love this more than anything else.

I can just picture you poised over that Daisy, waiting for the perfect bee pose before taking the photo. It is a great photo though.

  5. Pretty picture of the white daisy!

  6. We grow lots of flowers on our plot and the bees also love the flowers on fruit bushes even the insignificant flower on the currants and gooseberries.

It's important to grow a range of flower shapes as different bees feed from different shaped flowers - short tongued like daisies and long tongued like bells and tubes!

  7. There is a major lack of bees worldwide so we all need to do everything we can to encourage their survival. Nice pics.

  8. Great photo of the bee and the daisy.
I'm a great believer in flowers in the vege patch but you have to watch which flowers you choose. One year I planted cosmos. They flourished and self-seeded and grew like weeds. Now I stick mainly to marigolds and flowering herbs.

  9. Beautiful flowers, I'm a fan of phlox. Its supposed to be a good cut flower too.

  10. Yes we've noticed about the bees too Hazel. The front garden still has flowers so we attract some but Tony's noticed the dearth in the backyard.

    Gorgeous top photo.
