I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Living mulch.

At first, I was a little concerned that I would be spending a lot of time on the front garden... which is lovely, but mostly non productive. My stated aim is to live as sustainably as possible and I couldn't help thinking that the front yard was going to distract me from my task.

However, as you can tell from the blog entries, this part of the garden has provided me with lots of enjoyment and, as first year continues, I am sure it will have many more surprises.

It has also proven to be extremely self sufficient. A little cutting back here and there, some mowing and raking. The garden beds are heavily planted and ground covers have been widely used and minimize the need for weeding.

This one, which I know as 'aluminium plant' used to be a popular indoor pot plant but works well here. It is easy to pull out if it goes where it isn't wanted.

There are swathes of violets, including the little native one.

These are japanese maple seedlings and they will have to come out. But for the present they are a lingering reminder of Autumn.

I have planted a few fruit trees out the front now and have plans for more. I may try some berries among the shrubs and introduce strawberries as a ground cover.

This is my last blog for a while as I am venturing overseas. I will be back on line in the latter part of July.

  1. Imagine what surprises there will be in your garden when you return in July! Love the violets - reminds me that I must replant those that I lost in the drought.

  2. What a joy gardening is. So is travel...enjoy your time away. I will look forward to more gardening adventures when you have returned from your sojourn.
