My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Der's bugs and der's bugs!

Many of the capsicums and eggplants
in the greenhouse are bugged.
Covered in fat and juicy
hoards of green sucking aphids.

While cogitating on how best to deal with them,
I have been spraying them off with water,
and using my fingers to brush and squash.
Really quite satisfying.
I have been planning to make up some garlic spray.

So you can probably sense my joy when
I found this little carnivorous lady in there this morning.

And...she was doing something better
than just eating....

She was laying 17 or 18 perfect little eggs.
I am going to have an army of bug munchers!

  1. Isn't it amazing how they appear when there's bugs to be eaten.

  2. I have experienced the same joy recently when I saw a whole lot of ladybirds doing the wild thing on my roses. Hopefully there will be lots more of them soon.

  4. I wonder how long it takes for a Ladybird egg to hatch. In you circumstances, the quicker the better, I'd say...

  5. And that lovely ladybug/bird is an efficient aphid eater too :)

  6. Came across Ladybirds in my garden today too - didn't notice any eggs though.
It will be interesting to see when your Ladybird babies hatch - in the meantime Mother Ladybird can have a feast! HDW

  7. Joyfulhomemaker has some garlic...lol.....
Gotta love the ladies....they come in hoards every year to the love heart plum tree in our yard, just when the aphids strike the new shoots...and then they start doing the piggyback dance and lay all those lovely eggs...then a week or so later....no aphids....nature is wonderful.
Mark they dont take long, you will see the little black bugs next, they are the babies, so dont squash those!

  8. Isn't great that you can leave it to nature to sort out your problems? Hope they grow fast!

  9. I discovered aphids on the eggplants this morning, and the ones I didn't squash got sprayed with a bit of pyrethrum. I haven't noticed their presence on any of the other plants so hopefully I'll be able to nip them in the bud.
