My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Roosters..

No not a another tale of the male fowl type...
just that the youngest babies learned to roost last night.
How cute!
They are now 5 weeks old
and Hortense doesn't want anything to do with them now.
She chases them if they come sooking near her.
Hortense, in one of her last motherly acts, seems to be encouraging them.

Vera and Emily seem unsure if they want to share a perch!
Not all of the flock (in fact most of the flock) do not avail themselves
of the accommodation on offer.
They prefer to roost in the locquat tree next to the coop.
There is also a definite pecking order.

Here are Jenny's adolescents (12 weeks old)
on the lower branches (too high for the fox).

A little higher up, the three Araucanas sleep together.
These girls are 18 or 19 weeks old so I will expect
some little green eggs in the next month.

And right up at the top (no surprise)
is the rooster and a couple of his favourite concubines.

The tree is huge.  I am able to stand up in the coop,
so use that as a guide to see how big the tree is.
They are quite safe up there and the large downward
facing leaves direct any rain off them.

An Araucana...nice sideburns.

These three are like siamese triplets...never very far away from one another.

I know I shouldn't have favourites,
but Vera is such a character
and still loves a cuddle.
How could I not adore her!

  2. I didn't think that chickens would want to be up that high. It must be quite amusing seeing them get up into the top of that tree, because they can't really fly, can they?
Have you got names for the youngsters yet?

    1. They climb up by jumping on the wood pile, then the roof then from branch to branch. It is funny to go out there at dusk after they have gone to bed and throw some food around. They 'fly'...rather they flap and fall at a sort of 45 degree angle from high up and land with a thump. Hysterical!

  3. I was just thinking we hadn't heard from the chooks for a while and then you post all about the girls (+ lover boy). On Valentines Day too.

  4. We've never gotten to the point where we name our chooks. The best we've done is white chicken, or black chicken. I'm also impressed with your mug shots. I don't think I could get that close or have them stand still enough for such a distinguished shot.

  5. love your girls and boy, they are so pretty! Was rocky the dad for Hortense's offspring? Sure does look like Plymouth Rock genes are dominant!!

Zorro's a dream rooter by the way, he only crows at 6:30am!
