My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Cheep, cheep!

Are you my Mother?

I drove to Wagner's Hatchery in Coldstream this morning and purchased a dozen day old female chicks.

We managed to keep them warm during the day and gave them food and water.

But we are sad because one little black one died.  Such a little scrap of nothing.

My mum hates this photo because she says her hands look old.  I wonder
what 94 year old hands should look like?  I think it is a wonderful juxtaposition
of old and new.

Keeping warm and waiting for transfer to the mother ship.

When it was good and dark we snuck into the chicken shed and, one by one, popped the remaining chicks under a sleepy Henny.

It was funny because the chickens were all cheeping but, as each one was put under the hen, it stopped immediately.

I also removed those stinky eggs Henny has been sitting on.

Now lets just all hope that Henny, knows what to do when she wakes up in the morning!

  6. WELL, BEFORE ANYONE ELSE SAYS, 'OOH AAH AREN'T THEY CUTE' YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT HENNY DECIDED AGAINST MOTHERHOOD AT THIS TIME.

SHE KILLED FIVE...PECKED TO DEATH AND THROWN OUT OF THE NEST. WE RETRIEVED THREE THAT WERE OK BUT OUT IN THE COLD. WHEN IT BECAME CLEAR THAT HENNY WASN'T GOING TO CO-OPERATE WE TOOK THE REST.

SO NOW WE ARE HAND REARING THE SIX THAT REMAIN. I KNOW SHE IS ONLY A CHOOK AND PROBABLY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING (AND MAYBE WE DID SOMETHING WRONG} BUT I JUST CAN'T LOOK AT HER AT THE MOMENT! I HAVE A BAD CASE OF ANTHROPOMORPHISM!

  7. That is so sad Hazel. Perhaps she is smarter than you think and was just practising just like Brewster was practising!

  8. Oh Hazel, I've just been catching up on reading - that's terrible.
They can be nasty to each other sometimes. Hope the remaining six grow strong and healthy.
