My photo
Australia
I ran away from teaching to the country to grow veggies. There are also some chooks and a pair of troublesome goats who were so much trouble they had to go! My simple green life isn't always as simple or as green as I'd like...but I keep trying!

Never work with children or chooks

My sister posted a beautiful picture on Facebook of the chard (coloured silverbeet) in her garden.  I told her that the chooks love my silverbeet but do not eat the chard.  She was surprised because she was sure that chickens were colour blind.  I was sure, because my silverbeet is peeked to bits and the chard is still pristine and they have equal access to both.

When I was outside today I took some pictures of the chard in all its technicolor splendor, to share with you.

We know that spinach, silverbeet and chard are rich in iron and it seems as if there is really blood running through the veins in this one's leaves.

However, just as I was about to put my camera away, two of the girls decided that the chard did indeed look delicious after all and proceeded to make a liar out of me.

So now we know, chooks like silverbeet and chard.  But I don't mind them having a nibble as there is enough for us all and it is this, and other greenery, that makes the yolks of their eggs so golden.

  2. The chooks might be coloured blind but they know that if it is worth photographing it must be worth eating!
