Apples - late season

I have planted six late fruiting apple trees along the fence of the veggie patch. Brought from Digger's Garden Club, these and other fruit trees came in the post in a big box and created lots of discussion at the general store/post office when I picked them up.

From left to right they are:

• Blue Pearmain
• Bramley's seedling
• Rome beauty (x2)
• Sturmer Pippin
• Cox's Orange Pippin

These will fruit through May and April. They are all on dwarf root stock.

Here is a close up of one, and you may be wondering why it is tied like that. Well, I am following the KNNN espaliering method - that is knee-navel-nipple-nose! I found out about this on a Tasmanian web site Woodbridge Fruit Trees. It has lots of information about choosing, planting, and pruning fruit trees and is well worth a visit. The KNNN espaliering method is clearly explained in their 'Articles' section.

Having all the late fruiting apples together will enable me to net them all easily when the time comes.

I have about a dozen more fruit trees of various varieties, including some early fruiting apples, to find space for.
