Did a bit of scratching and weeding the the veggie patch today. Planted a salad mix (a couple of types of lettuce, rocket, chives, parsley, celery, and beetroot) so that we can pick the leaves. Planted one bed of green manure. I used a mixed grain that I brought from the nursery. I also planted some 'telephone peas' between the corn. Hopefully they will climb up and use the corn stalks as stakes.
Who would have thought that I would still be tying up tomatoes in the middle of April. The tomatoes are still ripening and at worst I will be able to make a batch of green tomato chutney. It may be a fluke of the odd weather, or a geographical oddity, however next year I will certainly be planting tomatoes from November through to January.
I like the idea of the peas climbing the corn. Hopefully the corn will protect the pea flowers from the frosts.
ReplyDeleteGreen tomato chutney, yum!
I thought it was an original idea ... then I was on the Net and found that it is a 'traditional' method to use old corn stalks as stakes for peas.
